Herbal remedies can be used for a wide range of ailments that are amenable to self-medication. For thousands of years, humans have used plants to treat skin irritations, wounds, and insect and snakebites. In prehistoric times, herbs were cooked in a vat of goose or bear fat, lard, or some vegetable oils and then cooled in order to make salves, balms, and ointments. There is a great diversity and richness in the various herbal traditions of the world, most of which still thrive today.
